Bible Study Methods
Do what works best for you
Method 1 - How to Study a Bible Passage
Read the passage, then answer these questions:
-
What is the main thing that stood out about God from this passage?
-
Do you have any questions about what you have read and what do you think the answers are?
-
How does this apply to me?
-
Who are you going to tell about what you have read and learned about God?
Method 2 - How to Use the SOAP Method
S: Scripture
Select a verse or short passage that stands out to you. Write it out word-for-word in your journal. This simple act forces you to slow down and focus on the exact wording.
O: Observation
Write down what you observe about the text.
-
Who is speaking and who is the audience?
-
What is the historical or literary context?
-
What words or themes are being repeated?
A: Application
Make the scripture personal. Ask yourself:
-
How does this truth apply to my life today?
-
Is there an attitude I need to change or a specific action I need to take?
P: Prayer
Write out a short, honest prayer based on what you just read. Use it to thank God for His truth, confess any areas of struggle, and ask the Holy Spirit to help you live out your application.
Method 3 - The P.O.N.D. Method
Inspired by Mary in Luke 2:19 who "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart," the Ponder method (often adapted into P.O.N.D.) helps you digest short passages.
-
P - Pause: Take a deep breath, quiet your mind, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your reading before opening your Bible.
-
O - Observe: Carefully read a short passage (1–3 verses) and write down what you see. Note the speaker, verbs, repeated words, or main subject.
-
N - Note the Lesson: Answer: What is this passage teaching me about God's character? Write down the core biblical truth or spiritual lesson.
-
D - Direct & Do: Personalize the text. How does this apply to your current struggles? Make an actionable, measurable plan for obedience.
